Google Adsense and Alternate Ads
Alternate Ads and Public Service Advertisements
Google Adsense serves targeted advertising to those that are enrolled in its programs. These are based upon topics and subjects pertaining to websites. There are instances when those topics show no relevance. Thus there are alternative ads. This is where you want to be careful.
If you use alternate ads and do not follow one of the below resolutions your advertisement will become a Public Service Ad. These advertisements will NOT produce revenue for you! So let us look at those resolutions.
Color:
With this you can enter any hexadecimal color code or choose from one of their colors. By choosing the correct color, you can actually make your advertisement block become invisible. What I do is have the ad the same color as the color of my page.
Images:
You can use and image that would add to the vision of your page and bring more life to it. You will need a fully defined URL to upload it.
HTML Page:
Another option is to use it for another advertising link. Use an image link that will point to another page. You will need to specify and HTML as alternate ad. Note that Google suggests using absolute URL’s.
Collapsing Ad Units:
The Collapsing Ad Units code collapses your ad unit. This process actually gets rid of the non ad areas. Thus you have a more pronounced affect to your Adsense Ads. In order to accomplish this you will have to host a small HTML file on your domain. The alternate ad URL will reference the HTML file.
I use a combination of the above depending upon which affect that I need to create. This is based on several factors such as the topic, advertisement, and other factors. Take all of these things into mind.
